Bodhi’s Contribution to CHT and NE India

Bodhichariya High School in Kolkata is partially funded by Bodhi. The school is located in northern Kolkata and admits both fee paying and non-fee paying students from CHT & NE India

There are not many organizations willing to help the indigenous communities in North East India & Bangladesh. Some of the impediments are restricted access, political unrest and poor communication. Bodhi is an organization which persevered to help the indigenous communities in NE India & Bangladesh. Bodhi is a Buddhist NGO based in Australia & USA. It has been helping indigenous community in CHT & NE India for several years. Following are some of the projects it’s funding.

Sneha School, Arunachal

Bodhi is funding a school run by an NGO named Sneha in Arunachal. As you may know Chakma & Hajong children are forbidden to attend government schools in Arunachal. Sneha’s school provide education to the Chakma & Hajong children in Arunachal who otherwise would not have the opportunity to go to school. Bodhi has a budget of AU $5000 per year for Sneha. However this year (2008) Bodhi has contributed AU $10000, extra money was for insfrastructure development. For more detail info please visit Bodhi’s website on Sneha:

Mobile Health Clinic, Mizoram

Bodhi is working with CMS (Chakma Mahila Sumiti) to set up a mobile health clinic in Mizoram. As you may be aware Mizoram government neglects Chakma & Reang communities. Health facilities are virtually non-existent in Chakma & Reang inhabited areas of western Mizoram. Many die from preventable diseases like maleria, water borne diseases etc. Mobile health clinic will significantly reduce mortality among the Chakma & Reang communities. Following is an excerpt from Bodhi’s website on CMS:
“BODHI has made a donation to the Chakma Mahila Samity (CMS), a women’s organisation in the northeast Indian state of Mizoram. ‘BODHI is the maiden overseas organisation to stand by the Chakma Mahila Samity in materializing its aims and objectives,’ writes Jyotsna Chakma Verula from Kamalanagar, Lawngtlai.”

Bodhi’s contribution to our community would not have been possible without the contribution from some members CHT community in Australia. In 2008, CHT community in Australia collectively contributed more than AU $2,000 to Bodhi. Bodhi in turn contributed about AU $12,000 to our community in CHT & NE India.
