Workshop on Land Rights of IPs and Development Strategy held in Dhaka

On 11 September 2005 a workshop on Land Rights of IPs and Development Strategy held at BIAM in Dhaka was organised by national daily Samakal, RDC (Research and Development Collective) and Action Aid where Mr. J B Larma, President of the PCJSS and Chaorman of the CHTRC attended as chief guest. Addressing the first session of the workshop, Mr. Larma said that the CHT Accord could not be materialized, as the policy makers of the country were not sincere and interested. He reiterated that it would be easy to implement the Accord if the policy makers were sincere, democratic-minded and progressive. It was a political issue and the political leaders have to come forward to solve the problem politically.

He said that the indigenous people were being uprooted from their own lands across the country. Around 25 lakh indigenous people were on the verge of extinction across the country. He also mentioned that a land right of the indigenous peoples was neglected under different systems and hence they were losing their own land. He said that the demands of indigenous peoples would not be fulfilled until a democratic and progressive government comes to power.

Editor of the daily Samakal Mr. Golam Sarwar presided over workshop while Prof. Dalem Chandra Barman of Dhaka University and Dr. Abdur Razzak, MP attended the meet9ng as special guest.
