UPDF holds protest march and rally in Khagrachar

Army-BDR Drive to Evict Jummas in Sajek:

15 July 2005. Khagrachari District Unit of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) has held a rally in Khagrachari today in protest against demolition of Jumma houses and eviction of 300 families in Sajek under Rangamati distrcit.

Around 2,000 people attended the rally braving heavy rain.

The army halted a jeep carrying UPDF supporters at Mahalchari and detained one, whose name could not be known immediately.

Before the rally, a protest march was held, but the police intercepted it first at Khezur Bagan and then at Chengi Square and refused to allow it to proceed further towards the main town. The police officer present on the spot told the UPDF processionists that he had been strongly advised by the army not to allow the march into the town.

Later, the UPDF held a rally at Swanirbhor. Presided over by Chittagong Unit organiser of the UPDF Animesh Chakma, the rally was addressed by Mithun Chakma, General Secretary of Democratic Youth Forum, Antarika Chakma, General Secretary of Hill Women’s Federation and Sunirmal Chakma, a central committee leader of the Hill Student’s Council. The meeting was conducted by UPDF leader Ujjal Smriti Chakma.

The speakers condemned the recent Army-BDR drive to evict Jumma families as part of a broader plan to settle Bengali people in Sajek. They urged the government to immediately put an end to such barbarous acts, cancel the plan to expand Bengali settlements in Sajek and compensate and rehabilitate the victims of the Sajek eviction drive.

The speakers warned that any plan to expand Bengali settlement, including the one in Sajek, would be thwarted by all possible means.

UPDF will hold another protest march and rally in Chittagong on 22 July against the Sajek incident.
