UPDF criticizes ban on Jumma Sambad Bulletin

HR Monitoring Cell, UPDF, January 11, 2007

United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) has criticized the ban on Jumma Sambad Bulletin, a mouth piece of the Jana Samhati Samiti.

The order banning the bulletin was issued from the office of the Rangamati Deputy Commissioner on 28 December 2006.

UPDF General Secretary Rabi Shankar Chakma in a statement issued to the press today termed the ban as infringement of the right to freedom of speech as enshrined in the constitution of Bangladesh.

Alleging that all the previous governments have violated the fundamental rights of the CHT people, Mr. Chakma said the past governments had also banned popular news magazines such as Radar, Satellite and Jumma Kantha published from CHT.

He further said every citizen of the country has the right to free speech, adding any infringement of this right would result in unpleasant consequences.
