Protesters call on international community to help Thet minority following alleged arson attacks

Over 300 Rakhine residents protested in front of a UN office in Maungdaw township on June 14 claiming the international community has not done enough in response to a spate of attacks against a Buddhist minority community in Bangladesh.

Led by the Arakan National Party (ANP), the protesters slammed the United Nations for allegedly failing to protect the Chakma minority – also called Thet – who live in the Chittagong Hills.

U Khin Maung Than, chair of the ANP, said that thousands of Chakma residents from Rangamati District’s Longadu area have been displaced after several arson attacks destroyed three villages on June 2. He said 200 houses and shops were destroyed in the remote area.

The protesters said the UN Human Rights Council has not said anything about the issue, and they want to call the international community’s attention to it.

“We are protesting in front of the UN office because we want to let the whole world know about the bullying and killing of the Thet minorities by the Bengali people in Bangladesh,” said U Khin Maung Than.
