Protest in New York against recent atrocities in CHT

A protest demonstration organized by the Jumma Diasporas under the banner of the JUMMA PEOPLE -USA held on March 1, 2010 in New York in front of the United Nations Head office for the recent Bangladeshi military atrocities in cooperation with illegal Bengali Muslim settlers in Rangamati and Khagrachari, the greater CHT. Many Diaspora USA Jummas, human rights and peace activists including monks from different counties like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Cambodia participated in the demonstration.

On 19 February Bengali-speaking Muslim settlers backed by Bangladeshi military perpetrated arson attacks on indigenous jumma villages in Baghaihat area, CHT. About 100 houses of indigenous people were burnt into aches and 8 indigenous people were killed and over 100 were injured in these attacks. The ethnic clashes and tension continued spreading in different areas of CHT till today. According to reports received, more than 80 houses of indigenous people were burnt down in Khagrachri district town alone and hundreds indigenous jumma people were injured in this series of arson attacks in other areas. Over 75 indigenous jumma people mostly teenage were arrested by the join forces. Thousands of indigenous people fled away from their homes and went hiding in forests fearing more attacks. They were reportedly living in critical condition.

The Diaspora indigenous Jumma is calling on the government of Bangladesh to carry out a prompt, impartial, and independent investigation into these attacks and killings to identify individuals who may have used excessive force.
The US Jumma also urging the UN intervention to ensure the minority indigenous Jumma people`s culture, tradition, religion in CHTs Bangladesh.
