Civil society leaders in Khagra-chhari yesterday said the present score-based promotion system, retained in the draft of Bangladesh Police Ordinance, 2007, should be changed.

They, however, welcomed the first Bangladesh Police Ordinance, saying that the new ordinance is expected to help make the police more professional, service-oriented, people-friendly, free from extraneous influences and accountable to the law and the people.

Emphasising formation of rules clarifying the duty of police, they said National Police Commission should be formed to look after the department.

There should also be a commission to receive complaints against corrupt police officials and members, and take measures against offences committed by police personnel, they said in a workshop at Khagrachhari Hill District Council conference hall.

The workshop was arranged to take citizens’ opinion on the draft of Bangladesh Police Ordinance, 2007.

There should be training facilities for all the officials and other members of the police service, the speakers said.

Along with marks from in-service trainings, honesty and daily activities, seniority and experiences, the ACR, and PSC merit list should be considered to ensure promotion for every member the police department to encourage them to dedicate their life for the service of the people, they said.

Additional DIG from Chittagong Monjur Kader Khan was present as chief guest at the workshop while Khagrachhari Hill District Council Chairman Monindra Lal Tripura chaired.

Among others, Additional District Magistrate Monindra Kishore Majumder, Khagrachhari Municipality Chairman Joynal Abedin and businessman Zafar Ahmed were present with over 100 members of the civil society.
