He gives confessional statement


Sept 18: Local leader of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) S M Masud Bin Ishaque who was earlier arrested by the police for his suspected links to the August 17 bomb blasts in Sonadanga thana area has confessed today that he received training along with some others on the handling of grenades and AK-47 rifles at two different places in 2001 and 2002.

Accused Masud who made a confessional statement before the metropolitan magistrate Shefina Begum today under section 164 CrPC said the night-long training was organised by JMB leaders at a house at village Aichgati under Rupsha upazila in 2001 and at Daulatpur Pabla Ahale Hadith mosque in 2001 and 2002.

In his statement, Masud said that the cadres of JMB were involved in the blasting of explosive devices in the circus show and the cinema hall at Satkhira town in 2002, resulting in deaths and injuries to some people.

Masud has also mentioned that JMB leader Shaikh Abdur Rahman, Bangla Bhai Siddiqur Rahman, Tareque Sunny and Asadullah Hazari were present at these training camps.

In his statement, he has, however, denied his links to the August 17 bomb blasts in Khulna city.

Accused Masud was taken on a 12-day police remand on September 7 for questioning and was sent to Khulna jail this afternoon after his statement before the magistrate.

Our Staff Reporter adds: Police yesterday arrested three persons, one from Manikganj Sadar thana area and two from Joypurhat district, for their alleged involvement in the August 17 countrywide bombings. One bomb was blasted and four bombs recovered in Narail district yesterday.

Our Narail Correspondent says: Another bomb was blasted and four more bombs were recovered at Durgapur village under Sadar upazila in the district yesterday.

Police and local people said the bomb was blasted behind the house of one Tomail Beg near Osmin Bin Affan Qawmi Madrasa at about 7am.

Residents of the area woke up from sleep due to the big bang of the bomb blast and they immediately informed police. Police rushed to the spot and recovered four more bombs and splinters of the exploded bomb. Nobody was arrested as yet in this connection.

Our Manikganj Correspondent reports: Sadar Thana police arrested one person, a suspect in the August 17 serial bomb blasts across the country, from Palora Bazar area yesterday morning.

The arrested was identified as Abdul Baten (48), son of late Kazi Abdus Samad of village Talibabad in Betila Mitora union under Manikganj Sadar police station.

He is a teacher of Awrangabad Al-Markzul Mahila Madrasa and also the organising secretary of Manikganj district unit of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish.

A team of Manikganj Sadar police rushed to the Bazar area at about 8 am and arrested him.

Police sources said that he was being interrogated by the joint interrogation cell comprising police and intelligence officials regarding his alleged involvement in the August 17 bomb blasts.

Our Joypurhat Correspondent reports: Police arrested Idris Ali Mondal (55) and his son Abdul Jabbar (35) from Jamalganj under Akkelpur upazila in the district on Saturday night.

When asked if the two arrested are the disciples of Dr Asadullah Galib of Rajshahi University or involved in the serial bomb blasts, Officer-in-Charge of Akkelpur police station said, they are being quizzed. He also declined to give details ‘in the interest of the investigation.’

The number of arrested persons suspected for their links to the August 17 countrywide bombings has risen to 29 in the district with the Saturday night’s arrest of the two.

Our Correspondent from Chapainawabganj reports: Chapainawabganj Detective Branch (DB) of police detained two persons including a woman on Saturday night to know about their relatives involved in the 17 August bomb blasts.

The detained persons are Abdus Samad, brother-in-law (sister’s husband) of a JMB cadre, Shakhawat of Ramchandrapurhat under Sadar upazila and Shahnaj, wife of Shakhawat.

Samad was detained from his rented house at Balubagan from where DB police recovered books, papers, a video cassette and CDs of JMB on September 15. Shahnaj was detained from Puthia under Rajshahi district.

Meanwhile, police placed a prayer to the ADM court of Rajshahi to take JMB cadre Shahidullah on remand. Shahidullah was arrested from Parchadpur village of Pachandar union under Tanore upazila of Rajshahi district. He was the commander of the 17 August bomb blasts in Chapainawabganj.

BSS adds: Police arrested two suspected Jamaatul Mujahedin (JMB) members yesterday night from Dubrakora village under Haluaghat upazila in the district.

The arrested persons are identified as Abdur Rahman, 45, son of Naib Ali of Binnakori village under Muktagacha upazila and Akhter Ali, 25, son of Ahmed Ali of the same village.
