Innocent villagers tortured indiscriminately by the army in Bandarban

On 22 September 2005 at 4.00 p.m. the army led by Lt. Manir of 19 Bengal from Baghmara camp under Bandarban sadar upazila tortured Jumma people indiscriminately at Baghamara bazar in connection with a trifling matter. Mr. Tongula Tanchangya s/o Purna Kumar Chakma from Jogesh Chakma Para of Baghamara, among others, went to the teashop run by Md. Nurul to have snacks. Shopkeeper Md. Nurul supplied stale food to him. A quarrel was occurred while Tongula Tanchangya refused to eat this stale food. In the meantime, the shopkeeper Md. Nurul secretly sent information to Baghmara army that some tribal miscreants entered in the shop. Receiving this news, a group of army led by Lt. Manir rushed there and started to beat the Jumma people without any enquiry. More than 15 Jummas were beaten indiscriminately. Among them, following three Jumma got injuries:

  1. Mr. Mong Prue Marma s/o Ushamong Marma of Wayabai Para of Baghamara;

  2. Mr. Babul Chakma s/o Bilendra Chakma of Jogesh Chaka Para of Baghmara;

  3. Mr. Tongula Tanchangya s/o Purna Kumar Chakma from Jogesh Chakma Para of Baghamara.

In protest against the incident, the Jumma villagers have been boycotting the teashop since 23 September. Later the army tried to compromise with the Jumma villagers. The army also confessed and apologized for the incident. But the Jumma villagers were adamant to boycott the shop.
