Innocent villager shot death by forest guards in Kaptai

On 13 September 2005 at around 4.00 p.m. an innocent villager named Mr. Uching Nue Marma (22) s/o Mong Chinghla Marma was shot death by the forest guards led by Md. Saidur Rahman, Assistant Forest Conservator and Mr. Habibur Rahman, DRO of Karnaphuli forest post. The victim was caught by the forest guards while he entered the jungle for finding out his cows. He was first tortured and then shot death by the forest guards. The forest guards ran away when the villagers rushed in the jungle hearing firing. The dead body of the victim was found on next day in the jungle (14 September).

The local people of the area protested against the killing of innocent villager and Mr. Thowaiching Marma, Chairman of the Chitmaram union, on behalf of the local people, submitted memorandum to the Prime Minister of People’s Republic of Government of Bangladesh through Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) demanding examplary punishment to the forest department personnel involved with this incident. Besides, the forest department officials are threatening relatives and local people to lodge forest case against them if they (relatives and local people) would continue campaign against the forest employees in connection with this incident.
