Military personnel have rounded up four elderly Jummas from their houses in the village of Kudukchari, 15 kilometers north-west of Rangamati town.

They were picked up from their houses at around 6 in the morning today and taken away to Ghagra zone in an armoured vehicle.

The arrested Jummas are Manik Lal Chakma, 45, ex-chairman of Kudukchari Union Council; Subol Chandra Chakma, 35, incumbent member of Kudukchari Union Council; Samratsur Chakma, 40, headman of Kudukchari Mouza; and Moni Lal Chakma, 60,father of a UPDF activist.

While the incumbent UP member Subol Chandra Chakma was released after primary interrogation from Ghagra zone, the rest were handed over to the Rangamati Thana police.

The army called in police to the zone headquarters and then handed the arrested Jummas over. They were taken to Rangamati police station in the afternoon.

They have been shown arrested in the Gyana Lal Chakma murder case, it is learnt. Mr. Chakma, then chairman of Kudukchari Union Council, was killed by unknown assailants in late January this year. He is believed to be a strong supporter of the UPDF and helped file the nomination papers for the UPDF president Prasit B. Khisha in the aborted January 22 elections.

The arrested Jummas are also known to be supporters of the UPDF and a UPDF leader in Kudukchari termed their implication in the case as “unfortunate and ill-motivated”.
