Follow-up of Sajek eviction:

In June 2005 the BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) of Rului camp of 32 battalion led by one Subedar destroyed the houses of the Jum cultivators in the name of so-called terrorist cleansing programme. The following names of village no. 8 of Kamalak mouza under Sajek union whose houses were destroyed have been received so far. The valuables of the houses have been destroyed and they were also tortured by the BDR personnel. The victims were:

1)      Mr. Kula Mani Chakma (45) s/o Bhupil Chandra Chakma

2)      Mr. Chandra Bijoy Chakma (35) s/o Chandra Joy Chakma

3)      Mr. Gopal Chakma (48) s/o Birendra Chakma

4)      Mr. Bira Ranjan Chakma (40) s/o Nishi Mohan Chakma

5)      Mr. Smriti Shankar Chakma (30) s/o Purna Mohan Chakma

6)      Mr. Indu Bikash Chakma (30) s/o Rajani Kumar Chakma

7)      Mr. Kiranjit Chakma (60)

8)      Mr. Madan Kumar Chakma (55) s/o Kalya Sing Chakma.

There are also several Jum cultivators whose names are not available due to remoteness of the areas. On the other hand, on 20 June 2005 Mr. Shanti Kumar Chakma (ex-member of Sajek union) of same village was called to the camp and tortured by the Commanding Officer (CO) of Baghaihat BDR sub-zone Mr. Abdur Rab. He was falsely accused to form and control armed group in favour of PCJSS. On 17 June 2005 Mr. Chittacha Chakma s/o Ban Kumar Chakma of village Gangaram Mukh by the army of local army camp while he was returning home from Jum farm. He was released on the request of the villagers.

On 29 June 2005 the houses of the following Jum cultivators have also been destroyed:

1)      Mr. Fula Mani Chakma (27) s/o Bhagalya Chakma of village Debachara under Sajek;

2)      Mr. Ramani Chandra Chakma (32) of village Debachara under Sajek;

3)      Mr. Nakreng Chakma (35) s/o Tibirabuo Chakma of village Debachara under Sajek;

4)      Mr. Denga Chakma (28) of village Debachara under Sajek;

It is also learnt that at present 25 families of Bengali settlers are staying at Massalong area of Sajek union under Baghaichari upazila (sub-district). They might be settled down there under recent government’s initiative for settlement of Bengali families in the areas.
