DYF leader, 3 villagers arrested in Longudu, Rangamati

A central leader of the Democratic Youth Forum, a front organisation of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), and three other innocent villagers were arrested in the last three days in Longudu Upazilla under Rangamati district.

Mr. Michael Chakma, organising secretary of the DYF and Sumon Chakma, age 16, s/o Tridib Chakma of Bhaibonechara village, were arrested on 25 October when a group of army personnel from Maini zone raided Baro Harikaba village at 2:30 p.m.

Thereafter, the army personnel raided more villages in the area and arrested two other innocent villagers in two separate raids. They have been identified as Shukro Ranjan Chakma s/o Shashi Kumar Chakma of village Bengichara and Anadi Chakma s/o Biraj Chandra Chakma of village Baro Kattali. Both of them were arrested on 27 October from their respective villages.

The army took all the four Jummas including DYF leader Michael Chakma to Maini zone and reportedly subjected them to inhuman physical torture. No one was handed over to the police nor was produced before any court of law till last night.

None of the arrested is wanted by police. Mr. Michael Chakma has been staying at his village home in Baro Harikaba for the last few months as political activities remains suspended after the state of emergency was imposed on 11 January this year.
