Armed JSS men destroy a village in Baghaichari

On 1 December 2007, a vestige group of armed JSS men led by Aloran effectively destroyed the village of Bolpiya under Bongoltoli Union in Baghaichari Upazilla of Rangamati district.

The armed band of the JSS forcibly ousted all the 32 families of the village on the plea that they provided shelter to the members of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF).

The evicted Jumma families have now taken shelter with their relatives and friends in different areas of Baghaichari Upazilla.

The latest JSS action came after a long pause and is seen as a last ditch effort to maintain its armed group.

In the last few months, the armed members of the JSS have been ousted from Khagrachari district and most part of Rangamati and Bandarban districts.

These months also witnessed a rift and bloody conflict between the two groups of the JSS that cost the lives of many of their members.

A break-away faction of the JSS, calling itself “reformist”, has been active and called upon the JSS president Santu Larma to quit his post. They said as long as he remains the top boss of the JSS, the intra-Jumma conflict cannot be resolved peacefully.

Terming Santu Larma as outdated, the Jana Samhati Samiti (reformists) called for a united front of all the Jumma progressive forces for a vigorous movement against the government.

They have spilled the beans and brought a series of allegations against him including financial corruption, extra marital affairs, nepotism and totalitarianism.

The reformists also made the JSS chief solely responsible for the fratricidal conflict that cost the lives of hundreds of Jumma youths in their prime.

With the shrinking of its influence on CHT politics, the JSS is now merely the shadow of its former self.
