AI expresses concern over harassment of indigenous leaders

Saturday October 15 2005 10:03:02 AM BDT

The Amnesty International has expressed concern about reports that four leaders of Bangladesh’s indigenous people have become the targets of official harassment and intimidation.

Three of the leaders facing alleged intimidation are from the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the AI statement issued from the United States said.

Quoting newspaper reports, the AI said the leaders– Mangal Kumar Chakma, Mrinal Kanti Tripura, Ina Hume and Albert Mankin are to appear before the parliamentary standing committee on the CHT affairs ministry for comments they made at the United Nation’s Permanent Forum on indigenous issues in New York in May 2005.

AI said it has “studied the statements of the indigenous leaders to the above-mentioned UN forum and found nothing outside the remit of their fundamental rights to express their political views freely and peacefully.”
